The New York Daily News has established these fellowships in memory of the late Jason Sheftell, a beloved journalist at The News. We are now looking for three enthusiastic CUNY journalism graduate students who are ready to learn the exhilarating and vital world from the inside in a 12-week journalism fellowship at the city’s most vibrant newspaper. The perfect candidates will have an overwhelming affinity for our city, as Jason did.
During the summer of 2015, Sheftell Fellows will be immersed in three major aspects of the newsroom by rotating among the News, Features, and Digital departments of the sixth largest newspaper in the U.S.
Sheftell Fellows will be provided a mentor in each rotation as a go-to person to share stories, experiences and answer any questions. As fellows, you will not file papers or get coffee, and you will not be pampered at the Daily News. You will be expected to think on your feet and be self-motivated. However, you will have a challenging summer filled with learning (and doing) real journalism, including being welcomed to attend editorial news meetings.
HOW TO APPLY
Please provide the following to summer.internships@journalism.cuny.edu by Feb. 17, 2015:
- Resume
- Three to five clips
- Two letters of reference from professors or editors
- A 500-700 word essay answering the question: What obstacles have you overcome or experiences have you had in your life that made you decide to pursue a career in journalism?
The 12-week fellowships will run from mid-May to mid-August.
Compensation: $5,000 for the entire fellowship.
