The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism will pilot an unprecedented five-week workshop led by news product pioneer Hong Qu, and made possible by a generous grant from the Scripps Howard Foundation.
Up to 30 journalists will learn to think like product developers and managers.
Applications are now open to individual journalists and to newsrooms nominating individual journalists. The workshop will take place on Jan. 7, 14, 21 and 28 and February 4, 2017 in person in New York as well as live through a webinar. Applications end Dec. 1, 2016.
The CUNY J School is committed to diversity and encourages candidates of all backgrounds to apply.
Why now?
In the past, news products were simple: They were newspapers.
But in the digital age, things are less straightforward. News products can be websites, news apps, email newsletters and more.
Media organizations are rethinking how and when to deliver news to people to meet their information needs. They need help training staffs that can design, develop and manage news products
Why CUNY J+?
CUNY J+ is the professional development arm of the CUNY J School. Our job is to help working journalists keep their skills competitive and to help news companies train their workforce for a sustainable future.
Through industry surveys and round-table discussions with innovative leaders, we believe that the product approach is critical to the future of digital media and can lead to rewarding new career paths.
What will we teach?
This five-week, project-driven course will cover the principles, techniques and workflow of product development and management for news. It is open to journalists, designers, technologists and others interested in better serving the information needs of audiences. See more on the workshop page.
Workshop leader Hong Qu used his extensive professional experience in news product to design a curriculum. Qu is former CTO of Fusion, former product and UX lead at Upworthy, former user experience researcher at Google, former user interface designer at YouTube and also a Nieman fellow. He will be joined in class by various other product professionals from product-driven media organizations.
